I have El Capitan on my Mac. Tried to install Sierra and got the message that this version can't be installed on my computer. I think I have enough memory and storage and when I ask for "Learn More" it does not show anything.

What vintage Mac do have (a quick easy way to tell is to go to the Apple log at the top right of your screen and click on it, then select "About this Mac" and you will see detail on the year-type that it is).

There is your answer. See details posted by Viking. A 2009 Mac won't run Sierra (assuming it is an i-Mac). I expect I'll have that problem too in a year or so as my machine is a mid-2010 i-Mac.
What Mac specifically? "Mac" is very generic term for all the computers Apple makes.
As Viking's list shows there are 6 different types of Macs. Each one with a different requirement to able to handle Sierra.
Do you have one of the ones that specify "Late 2009 or newer"?
i.e Macbook or iMac?
If you have an MacBook Pro for instance, a Late 2009 Macbook Pro cannot update to Sierra. It needs to be Mid 2010 or later.
Sorry, I seem to keep misstating this... Per the list on the Apple web page (How to get macOS Sierra - Apple Support) and pasted below, a late-2009 might run Sierra if it is one of the models so-indicated below (and assuming you have the corresponding version of OS X).
